Indigenous Food Systems – 2022
My proposal for this project is centred around considering the land a living being, and the idea that harvesting, preparing and consuming food are all social events.
In Braiding Sweetgrass, Indigenous scientist Robin Wall Kimmerer outlines the Honourable Harvest – an indigenous set of principles that guided traditional farming practices and describe farming as a discussion with the land, rather than an exploitation of it. By integrating the Honourable Harvest into my social programmed proposal, this farm goes beyond simply providing food – it becomes a place for the community to connect and socialize with eachother, and with the land that provides for them.
My architectural proposition fits into the community’s larger agricultural project by providing a gathering place that supports feasts and social gatherings, while enabling its inhabitants to become attuned to the unique character of the land they are on.
